Athletics Overview
The Athletic program was started in 1994, and shortly after, the school adopted the motto “Refuse to Lose.” This approach is taken in the field of play and in the classroom. Glenforest is a school where everyone who wants to participate in a sport can find a place either by participating on a team or by assisting in other areas. The coaching staff recognizes that every child has a unique talent or skill that can make a difference on one of our teams. The experience most children have in larger schools of wanting to participate, but being excluded, does not happen at Glenforest. Any student who wishes to participate in a sport gets the chance to do so. Here students often participate in sports for the first time in their life, and they love it! And then a remarkable thing happens; students actually see their academic abilities improve as they participate in sports. The energetic and enthusiastic staff at Glenforest tries to encourage students to participate in various sports. Because of the many values gained from athletics, such as self-commitment, discipline, character building, accountability, responsibility, teamwork, positive attitude and dedication, the staff feels that every child should be encouraged to get involved.
In addition we are blessed with many wonderful parent volunteers. The following video highlights, an example of one such volunteer, who is impacting every person participating in our Athletic program.
Glenforest offers sports in cross country, volleyball, bowling, basketball, soccer, baseball, golf and sporting clays. We also offer tennis as an intramural sport. Glenforest participates in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). SCISA requires all athletes to have a physical on file each school year . There is also a Agreement of Participation that must be filled in each year in addition to knowing every sport has inherent risk which requires a waiver form that must be signed by an adult.
Success
Every year we see success in our student-athletes. We define these goals in our Parent Handbook as well. We are proud of both the losses and the wins. Our victories come not only on the scoreboard; victories are found in teamwork, and overcoming fears in many forms. Yes, we have trophies and plaques in fact both our Bowling team and the Varsity Boys Basketball team finished as State Runner Up in 2009-2010, and we won the SCISA Class “A” State Championship during the 1997-1998 and 2003-2004 seasons. They also finished runner-up during the 2002-2003 season.
In addition, during the 2008-2009 school year the soccer, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and bowling teams participated in the state playoffs. The bowling team finished runner-up during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons. Glenforest has outstanding athletic facilities, including a gym that houses a weight room with up-to-date equipment.
At Glenforest, a student’s self-commitment, dedication and fortitude determine participation in athletics. Regardless of skill level, every child can be part of something special. Everybody can be a Glenforest Bulldog. To hear more click this video to find out recently from our own student-athletes!
