                      Frequently Asked Question

With better than a 5:1 student:teacher ratio, we offer a comprehensive, individualized program, balanced with an emphasis on enrichment designed to awaken students’ talents.  We see results which transform lives in a welcoming environment designed to meet learning difference and learning disabilities in order to achieve academic, social, and creative success.

We accept students with learning differences (undiagnosed) and learning disabilities (diagnosed) which includes attentional difficulties (ADD/ ADHD), or executive functioning deficits for example.  Our work will empower your student with skills and strategies to bridge the gap between their outstanding promise and present abilities.

We use the Arts, Athletics, and Academics to intellectually challenge them, creatively inspire and factually inform! Our students, despite the learning obstacle, are highly intelligent and have wonderful talents.  Please continue your search through our website to see our research-based program, and engaging community.

Can my Child attend Glenforest if he/she has been expelled from another school this year?

Glenforest School is designed for students who are experiencing academic difficulties due to learning challenges such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, Asperger’s Syndrome, or an attention deficit.  Our typical student has an average IQ level, but is not experiencing success in his or her school setting due to a learning disability or attention deficit.  Our students have not been diagnosed with a behavioral disorder and we do not offer a therapeutic component.

Is Glenforest School for only low functioning students?

The students who attend Glenforest all have an average to above average level I.Q., but do not function well in a large, institutional environment. Their intelligence is not the problem; it is how they process information which requires a smaller classroom with personalized teaching that accommodates the specific learning difference such as ADD or Central Auditory Processing Disorders.

Can a student who graduates from Glenforest School attend a major college?

Glenforest graduates have attended and graduated from every major college and university in South Carolina. For example, in the last 4 years we have had 3 students accepted into the Citadel. And since 1983, 87 percent of Glenforest’s graduating seniors have been accepted to the university or college of their choice. “This demonstrates why we say Glenforest turns educational challenges into lifetime opportunities,” Dr. Glenda Sternberg Founder / Retired.

What sets Glenforest School apart from public schools?

Our team of teachers are focused in accommodating your child’s learning differences and our personal communication with the parents is designed to collectively provide a culture that encourages your family.  We seek to understand  you, and to motivate your student.

We are not a public / Federal / State school that seeks to mainstream a student that sits in the back of a regular classroom only to be pulled out to work with a resource teacher nor would we place them in a self contained class. If your student, with a learning difference(s), is made to feel like they don’t fit in at public school why would they want to go back?  Does your large classroom setting, and poor note skills cause you to ask if this is too much?  Then we know Glenforest can help.

Maybe it is the form of tests which are given, maybe your student is struggling with low self-esteem, or does not like to read?  Are they slipping behind in a grade or even two because they truly struggle to read?  Then Glenforest can help.  A parent commented regarding a Glenforest teacher recently “that in twelve years of sharing our story you were his first teacher to realize we were really trying to help the teacher and our student communicate to do well.”  So if you are trying to keep up appearances with your student’s teachers but your child’s learning style does not fit the current environment then your child will not only think they cannot do the work but will also start to believe that they are a failure.

When you choose to send your child to Glenforest you will find the whole school is set up for your child’s success as we all work together to accommodate his or her learning differences.
