Glenforest Art Circus! – from Mrs. Bowers
Several of our art classes are busy creating a circus inspired by the artist, Alexander Calder and his very own “Circus de Calder“. We began by watching Calder’s short film “Circus de Calder” where he demonstrates creatively his entire “small” circus that he had constructed out of found objects and wire over the course of many years. He tells his audience how his circus grew over the years and how he traveled with his little circus most everywhere he went – he even used it to entertain friends and family.
We are now in the midst of creating our very own “Glenforest Circus” – each student has chosen their favorite act from the circus and creating it from recycled materials like scrap wood pieces, wine corks, popcicle sticks, wire, bits of fabric, etc. If you have any of “recycle” items that you think we might could use, please send them with your art student!
Next week, Friday February 4th, we are taking a field trip to see the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus! We should be return from this trip filled with inspiration to complete our circus!
In other news, our High School students have been working on Abstract Acrylic paintings. We have been looking at the artwork of Artists Jasper Johns and Jackson Pollock. During this time in class we have actually constructed and stretched our own canvases – this we did without incident (we had to use a staple gun…..I was qite nervous about this!). If you get a chance, please check out the beautiful paintings that are on display throughout the school – these paintings are on our Artsonia site as well!!!
